The Before I Die… wall is coming to OLLI-California State University Fullerton.
Appearing Thursday, August 9th, and Friday, August 10th, in the OLLI Courtyard it moves to the OLLI Open House display area on Saturday, August 11th.
What’s on your bucket list (to do before you die)? Go to Rome? World Peace? See my great-grandchild? Sky Dive? Pet a Harp Seal? You are invited to write in your hopes and dreams on the chalkboard.
Originally appearing in New Orleans in 2011 as the inspiration of Candy Chang, the wall has been replicated in cities around the world. Drawing upon Michel de Montaigne’s proposition that “to philosophize is to learn to die,” the Before I Die project examines the ways the walls of our cities can help us grapple with death and meaning as a community today. . She wanted to start a conversation, so she covered a crumbling house in her neighborhood in New Orleans with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with the prompt, “Before I die I want to _____,” so anyone walking by could pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on death and life, and share their personal aspirations in public. The next day the wall was covered with hopes and dreams.
