We were ordered to evacuate about 8 pm last night as the Castlewood fire was rampaging the hillsides just north of our home in Fullerton. I grabbed my computer backup drives and my laptop computer while Cindy grabbed a chocolate bar, cellphone chargers and our Golden Retriever, Jenna, and we drove our cars to rendezvous at the Albertson’s parking lot about a mile south of us. What do you buy when you are “homeless” and living in your cars? We always have bottles of water and cans of Spam in both cars, available when we encounter a homeless person. So I bought a package Oreo cookies and two apples and told the cashier about the evacuation.
While eating cookies and chocolate in our car we pondered our next action and answered numerous texts from family and friends—thank you to all who were concerned about us. We love you.
Our neighbors were at Parks Junior High School so Cindy drove there while I bought coffee at McDonalds (which had numerous evacuees discussing what to do next). I met up with Cindy and our neighbors, drank our coffee and then Glen and I walked up Parks Street to the top of the hill to view the activities. Police had blocked access back into our neighborhood and we could only see snatches of fire and lots of lights on dozens of emergency vehicles along Castlewood.
We decided that the fire mitigation would last until morning so Cindy and I were invited to stay at Evelyn Schirmer’s home and Glen and Pam went to a friends’ home. To our relief, the evacuation order was lifted about 10:30 pm and we could get back home. No damage other than the whiff of smoke in the air.
Thank you Lord for the fast response by our fire and police departments. Cindy plans to go to the stations and give our responders a hug—that’s Cindy for you!
How fortunate we are! There are thousands of people who have evacuated their homes throughout California as our state burns. We had our cellphones enabling us to communicate. Many cellphone towers are not working because electricity has been shut off for two million residents.
What’s next for paradise?
